Ways to get involved and take advantage of volunteer opportunities every day.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities Are Everywhere

Volunteer opportunities are all around you. All you have to do is take a quick look and you will find something — or someone — who could use your help.

You don’t have to be a member of a service club or write your name on a sign up sheet to qualify for volunteer opportunities. Anyone can take advantage of the opportunities to volunteer that abound every day. Just take a look around you and see where you can help. There are volunteer jobs you can take advantage of that can make a difference in your community and in the lives of others.

No Commitment Necessary

Even the noncommittant can find volunteer work opportunities. Most places appreciate any sort of help, whether you can make a commitment for an extended length of time or simply want to try it out once. No one will turn away a willing hand and heart, even if you cannot come back again. They will find something for you to do for a few hours or whatever length of time you can give them that day.

Of course, volunteer positions abound for those of you who can commit to a certain amount of time or a regular schedule. Organizations love the help of volunteers who can dedicate a regular schedule of time to a particular cause over a length of time. Many times, those who need your service can benefit from your regular attendance.

Find a Passion

Look for volunteer opportunities in an area in which you have an intense passion. If you love something, you will be a great volunteer — and you won’t mind not getting paid. You can find volunteer work in any area, so you are bound to find something in which you want to get involved. Any organization will be willing to work with you to help you find service opportunities with their group, especially if you share common interests.

For example, if your life has been impacted by cancer, look for volunteer work with a cancer fundraiser or a group that provides free mammograms. If you are an advocate for literacy, ask about volunteers at your local library or literacy council for service opportunities in tutoring, reading programs or fundraising.

Ask at Church

Local churches are great places to ask for volunteer opportunities. The churches always need help from volunteers to help the church, but also usually have their finger on the pulse of the needs in the community. Most churches cannot fulfill all the requests the community makes of them without the help of willing people outside the church to take advantage of volunteer work.

You can ask at your own church or simply knock on the door of any church in your community and ask about volunteer opportunities so you can give a lift to someone else.

It’s the Little Things

Important opportunities do not have to be huge projects that require hours of your life or change the lives of hundreds of people in your community. Every single chance you have to help someone else, no matter how insignificant the act may seem to you, is an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life.

Volunteer opportunities can come when you least expect them. Keep your eyes open and be ready and willing to take advantage of these opportunities whenever you can.
