If you’re wondering how you can make a difference in the life of someone else but don’t know how, you should look into donating to charity. The full value of charitable donations cannot be told because the good you have the opportunity to do as an individual reaches farther than you could ever track. Even if your charitable donation improves just one person’s life, you have done a service of untold value and kindness.
The great thing about donating to a charity is that you benefit from it as well. By doing this service, not only do you help someone else, but you also improve the quality of your own life. Although the true value of charitable donations could never be fully known, there are some benefits you can see.
- Most charitable donations are tax deductible
If you want your donation to be tax deductible, you have to be donating to a tax-exempt charity and/or religious group. Donations of stock or other property are usually valued at the fair market value of the property. For example, if you are donating your car to a charity, you’ll need to assess the fair market value of that vehicle. Then you need to keep records of your gifts and/or donations. Written acknowledgement or a receipt from the charity will usually suffice for this. Make sure you have documentation of your donation(s) so you can get the tax deduction you deserve. - Making a difference in someone else’s life
While for many causes you cannot how much of an effect or what exact effect your donation is having on others, at other times you can see the effects and the value of your charitable donations. Many organizations and charities will send pictures and other information upon request so you can at least have an idea on how your donation is helping the worthy cause. You can also get more involved if your charity is local or has a local branch by doing actual service with other volunteers or organization leaders. Making a donation is not the only way to serve and give of yourself to others. - Giving to others helps you feel good
It is a well known fact that helping others helps you feel good as well. You will notice a difference in your life as you are serving and giving to others. Good will is contagious, and the happiness you can bring into someone else’s life will reflect in your own happiness.
There are so many different effects of your donations. However, beside the fact that your donations can be tax deductible and make you feel good, you will probably never know the full value of the charitable donations you make. This is because the value of charitable donations goes far beyond just the organization you give the donation to; it goes to the people the organization helps, and there is no way of knowing how that help can improve others’ lives. Even a donation such as donating your used car to a charity could help make someone’s life better in ways you will never know. Make sure the charity you are looking into donating to is a legitimate charity (there are many scams and con artists out there claiming to be part of a charity) and see the effects your donation can have in your life as well as others’.
