The statistics about teenage substance abuse are dreadful and discouraging. The State Government of Victoria has published some helpful resources to assist parents in the anti-drug war before they have to drag their kids to a treatment center ( Title : Drug Information for Parents Subject : Alcohol and other drugs Publication Number : VIC - 5910 Publication Date : 1 / 08 / 2000 Author : State Government of Victoria ).
So how can parents tell whether their child is using drugs?Since the effects of drugs vary from person to person , it‘s tough to definitely recognize whether your child is using drugs . There are no visible physical or emotional changes that characterize a specific drug’s use . However , if your child is behaving in an unusual manner consistently , over a long period of time , there may be a drug abuse issue involved . The following changes may be indicative of a substance abuse .
- Lethargy
- Changes in eating patterns
- Extreme mood swings and explosive outbursts
- Staying out all night
- Drop in grades at school
- Other trouble at school
- Sudden or frequent changes of friends
- An unexplained need for money
- Having lots of money
- Valuable items missing
- Trouble with the police
What should parents do if they suspect their child is a drug user ? Overreacting and panicking will make your child even less willing to talk openly with you . Keep your composure and speak calmly in order to find out the facts . Show that you’re concerned, and that you don’t want your child using drugs, but make it clear that you love your child unconditionally .
You have to be very careful when you’re confronting your teenager. If you try to discuss your child ' s drug habit when you are angry, or while he or she is under the influence of a drug , it is likely that the discussion may turn into a bitter argument . We’d like to remind you not to blame yourself . Your child’s drug use doesn’t mean that you’re a bad parent or that you’ve failed . Young people are inclined to experiment with drugs , regardless of how caring and attentive their parents are .
If a parent wants to change his or her child’s opinion about drugs, he or she should strive to be a positive role model. The publication mentioned in the first paragraph indicates that “ children of parents who smoke and drink are more likely to smoke and drink themselves . Consider your own use of tobacco , alcohol and other drugs and the message this might give your child . Discuss your own drug use and that of others in a way that encourages your child to explore and clarify their attitudes and values .”
When dealing with substance abuse , information goes a long way . You should be able to discuss drug issues openly and honestly . If you don ' t know the answer to a question do some research and provide the right answer . Remember that communication is a two way street. Be prepared to listen to your child, and be careful not to oversimplify your child ' s concerns .
Contact a treatment center , preferably as many as possible , and get as much information as you can . It may be necessary to resort to a treatment center in order to cure your child’s substance abuse problem, depending on the severity of the problem. If so , do extensive research and choose a reputable treatment center with experienced and qualified specialists . Research the facilities of the prospective treatment center carefully .
