So you want to plan a vacation, but don’t know what to do with Rover or Fluffy while you’re gone? If you’re like me, each pet is an important member of your family and you would hate to leave any of them behind when you are going on an exciting trip. Think of the adventures you and your pet can share! Of course, for much of my vacations I end up pulling my dog, Lucky, away from squirrels and other enticing small creatures. Nevertheless, dogs, like people, can use a little fresh air and change of scenery once in a while. Taking your pets on vacation with you can strengthen your relationship with them and make your trip all that much more fun!
You may wonder why it is that people don’t take their pets on vacation with them very often. Well, one of the main reasons is that it is hard to find pet friendly lodging. Most hotels, motels, and inns for some reason do not appreciate pets stinking up rooms, destroying furniture, and annoying other guests. Go figure. But, luckily for you, there are many places that do offer pet friendly lodging so your best friend and you can have a comfortable stay wherever you go.
To find pet friendly lodging, there are a couple of options. The first, but not the best, option is to simply look for hotels, or places you want to stay, and call them up to see if they allow pets. However, this can take a lot of time and energy that you don’t want to spend. The best option is to look for pet friendly lodging on the Internet. There are many Web sites out there that are dedicated to helping you with this quest. Petswelcome.com and travelpets.com are just a couple of examples of sites that give information about traveling with pets and that can help you find pet welcome places to stay with lists of lodging in specific areas.
Although having your best friend on your trip with you is a great experience, you do have to worry about a few extra things with them along. Make sure you think of all the factors that will go into taking Butch along with you so you can decide whether this trip is really one you should share, or if you should have your neighbors watch your pets for you.
The first thing to consider when thinking of taking your pet on your vacation with you is whether it is a location the pet would enjoy. You wouldn’t think about going on a trip to the Grand Tetons with a friend who hates the outdoors. Consider whether you are going on a trip that your pet can feasibly share with you. If you are planning on visiting lots of museums and other exhibits, poor Fido is going to be left out. Also, the distance you are traveling should be a factor that you consider as well. If you are going on an airplane you’ll have to worry about transporting your pet via plane, which may be more of a hassle than you’re willing to go through.
Another thing you should remember is to check out the lodging requirements for pets. Double check that the place you are staying at really does accept pets. Also, check for other limits including size and kinds of pets that are accepted. Some places do not let large dogs stay in their rooms.
Traveling with your pet can be fun and rewarding; I have always enjoyed watching my dog Lucky chase or be chased by small animals, bugs, and other fearsome creatures. Just check out what your plans and accommodations are so you can find pet friendly lodging, and schedule activities your friend will enjoy. Here are some more tips about traveling with your pet:
- Ask what restrictions or fees the hotel requires for pets.
- Get a ground floor room so you can take your pet out quickly when needed.
- Bring blankets and toys from home so your pet has some familiar items and can rest easier.
- Don’t let your pet go into the public swimming pool.
- Try not to leave your pet alone in the hotel room where they could damage things. If necessary, bring a crate or carrier to keep them in when you are away, and don’t leave them for long periods of time. After all, that defeats the point of bringing them in the first place.
- If you have a cat, keep the litter box in the bathroom so it is easier to clean up.
