Let’s face it, even though we know that eating healthy is the smart way to go, no one wants to do it, least of all me. I’m the type of person who cringes at the thought of buying low fat foods. In fact if any of my friends offer me any food that claims less fat, sugar, calories, etc., I usually decide that starving would be better than depriving myself of good tasting food and decline the offer as quickly as I can. However, eating right is something everyone should think about, whether you are trying to lose weight or just want to be healthier.
Many young people think that they can eat whatever, however they want right now while they are young, then eat healthier when they get older. However, nutrition for life starts when you are young. If young people start the pattern of eating healthy now, it will be easier for them to continue that pattern when they get older. If you have children, teach them the importance of nutrition for life right now so they will have the knowledge and habits as they grow up.
When striving for nutrition for life remember that different problems arise at different times of your life. For example, though calcium is always important for strong bones, as you get older, you are at an increased risk for osteoporosis, which is a disease that results in your bones becoming fragile and brittle. Therefore, different nutrition tips are more important to follow than others at different times in your life.
Although everyone is different and may have special conditions that mean different eating habits than others, here are some general tips that will help in your quest for nutrition for life:
- Drink plenty of water. Most people do not drink enough water throughout the day. Water is important to flush out the system. The general rule is to drink about eight glasses of water a day.
- Eat foods with a lot of vitamins and minerals and be careful of foods that are high in fat. Fatty foods can lead to heart disease and obesity related problems and so should generally be avoided.
- Drink milk every day. This will give your body the calcium that it needs for strong bones. As you grow, your bones generally deteriorate some and a healthy amount of calcium will greatly help with avoiding this problem.
- Eat several fruits and vegetables a day. The general rule for this is to eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day. Doing this will help you get the vitamins and minerals you need which will help guard against many diseases such as cancer.
- Make time to exercise. Exercising keeps you healthy and feeling great. It is the perfect supplement to eating healthy.
Staying healthy for life is exactly what it sounds, something you have to follow for all your life. So, if you are like me and like to avoid healthy food like the plague (I generally make sure to walk on the other side of the isle when I spot anything even remotely healthy up ahead), you should probably shape up and start thinking about your future health.
