The use of the internet for finding airline fares and booking flights has increased rapidly over the past few years and will continue to grow as an important venue for airline travel. The ability of online discount airfare companies to negotiate low airfares for airline tickets, and the ever-increasing use of the internet will be major factors in this movement. In addition, the internet is an important method for airlines to reduce their paper processing load and shift those savings into the reduction of airline ticket prices.
Several online discount airfare organizations are becoming quite large. This gives them strong bargaining positions when selling discount airfares. Many sites also provide online booking services for hotels, rental cars, cruises, and vacations. In some cases, membership is required to access cheap discount airfares. Most will allow you to search until you are ready to book the flight. Some, such as BestFares, have a yearly fee for full access. This fee also allows the user to obtain an airline ticket discount.
Three of the more recognized sites for travel are Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity. When a prospective client requests an airfare quote from one of these sites, the client will receive a number of airfares for alternative flight itineraries. There are two companies which provide only one discount airfare option. The first is Hotwire. Hotwire will show you the best discount airfares available after you enter your travel dates. If you accept, your credit card is billed and the sale is final (they operate under a no-refund policy). After you are billed, Hotwire will notify you of the airline carrier and the flight times of the ticket you purchased.
The second is Priceline. Priceline allows you to bid on flights for given dates. They then take about fifteen to twenty minutes to indicate if your bid is accepted. Be careful, because once you accept it your credit card will automatically be charged and their discount airfare tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Generally their flights are early mornings, or evenings until 10:00 pm.
