Permanent Vacation: Buying a Home in Florida

We could all use a vacation-perhaps much more often than we have time to take them. Florida is a wonderful place to vacation, but what about settling down there? If you want to enjoy summer weather, beaches and palm trees year-round, you may want to consider learning more about Florida real estate.

Florida real estate is becoming appealing to more and more people for a number of reasons. Those looking to retire soon consider Florida for the laid-back, resort atmosphere the state provides in a number of areas. Younger businesspeople are also learning more about Florida real estate, especially when their careers take them to the Florida area (the beach makes for a pretty nice view from the office, and the convenience of a local beach getaway for the weekend is quite appealing).

But aside from the glamorous and relaxed lifestyle Florida is known for providing, there are some important facts to consider when you’re looking into purchasing or even selling Florida real estate. Some of the basic things to watch for are:

Area. While Florida is famous for its ‘summer year-round’ weather, not all areas of the state are that way. Your Florida real estate agent should be familiar with the area you’re looking to settle in , and can definitely help you come to some conclusions. If you’re looking for a place where any time is a good time for a beach party, you may want to consider areas in the southern region of Florida, such as West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, or Boca Raton. If you can stand a bit of a breeze every now and then, cities like Tampa, Orlando, or Tallahassee may be best for you. Because of the area you may choose, you’ll also have to consider:

Cost. As with any state, property differs in value depending on the location. Florida real estate agents in different parts of the state are aware of this, buyers are encouraged to do some research of their own before going to an agent, so that the two entities can work together to get the most affordable home for you. Factors that may affect cost include home features; such as a pool or Jacuzzi, or a home on the waterfront, the neighborhood the home is in, the overall economy of the area, and the quality of the home. Florida real estate may be slightly different from real estate in other areas, since the home features may be more geared towards recreation. Be sure you know what you are willing to pay—make sure you can afford the ‘extras’ before springing for a pool in the backyard! You can estimate costs and figure additional expenses for the home when you ask questions about the neighborhood.

Neighborhood. Since different families have different needs, it is important that you visit the neighborhood to make sure the home is suitable for your situation. If you are communicating with someone in Florida real estate due to a retirement move, you’ll probably want to live in a neighborhood that is fairly quiet and relaxed. If you’re moving with your family, you’ll most likely want to view houses in safe neighborhoods. Be sure to discuss all of this with your real estate agent, as you might see a house or two that you like, but choosing the right neighborhood is very essential for your comfort of living (not to mention peace of mind). Be sure you’re being taken to the areas that best suit you.

The Florida real estate market has available homes and properties in the 100-200,000s (pretty pricy), but there are lower priced homes that just may fit into your budget. If you’re thinking about moving soon, Florida just might be the place for you. Happy house hunting!
