Federal Grants

Obtaining Your Federal Grant

The government gives away 10 billion dollars monthly in federal grants. In order to capitalize on these funds provided by the federal government, all you need is a little information, motivation, and the right cause.

Why are people given grants?

The government has a significant amount of money set aside to give to individuals who are seeking financial assistance. These federal grants are given for a variety of purposes. Students and business grants are some of the most popular and well-known grants given away, yet there are several others available that are just waiting for people to apply.

Student grants are given to those who can give proof that they need assistance with paying tuition. These grants are funded by the government and also by private foundations. These foundations will give money away looking for tax write-offs. With government and private donations combined, there are ample funds available for those needing additional help paying for education.

Business grants are given are given to small businesses waiting to begin, or to existing businesses looking to expand. Many large businesses began on federal grants. Today, over 20 million people receive free government money to begin their businesses. There is over $30 billion dollars in free federal grants for small businesses and over $10 billion dollars for entrepreneurs. There is also $12 million dollars available for women, minorities, and low-income entrepreneurs.

Many of the grants available also set aside significant funds for minorities and women to encourage school and business growth. Grants are available for Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, African Americans and many other minorities in the United States.

The government also provides housing grants. These grants are for individuals with low credit who are unable to obtain a loan to buy a home. There is over $140 million dollars available from the government for housing. These grants will help relax credit requirements, allowing those with low credit to get a low interest loan to buy a home.

Other types of federal grantsavailable include research grants for those who may make significant discoveries, and medical grants are provided for those needing additional assistance paying for significant medical problems such as HIV and other continuing pharmaceutical needs.

How do you apply for a grant?

To apply for a federal grant you must first decide the grant opportunity and then find an agency with which to apply. Students wishing to apply for educational grants can apply through FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid). In order to apply, students must be either a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen, have a high school diploma and have enrolled in a higher education program seeking a degree or certificate. You may fill out an application through FAFSA online or your school may provide methods of application as well. Be sure to be equipped with your driver’s license, current bank statements, Federal Income tax returns, and current business records.

For other federal grants such as business and medical grants, it is easy to find application packages and instructions online. Search the web for more information on how to download applications for grants. You may also register for newsletters online which may notify you of new information in grants you are seeking.

There is a generous amount of money waiting to be used for grant purposes; a little time and patience and the right motivation can bring in a significant amount of federal grant money to the financially strapped individual.
