Factory warranties can cover anything from your new watch or to your computer, but how well do they cover your new car? Auto warranties are often supplied by the manufacturer, but do they provide the coverage you want? Extended auto warranties may give you the extra coverage you need to maintain your peace of mind.
While most manufacturers do provide auto warranties, the coverage is usually limited by the age of the car, the miles on the odometer, or other factors. While this limited warranty may be sufficient for some drivers, many prefer the extra security of an extended auto warranty. Extended auto warranties will cover a car during and/or after the factory warranty has expired. They may thus be used to supplement a current manufacturer’s warranty or to replace the factory warranty after it expires.
- Extended auto warranty: - a contract purchased aiming to protect a vehicle against the unexpected costs of repairs and/or breakdowns, for a predetermined period of time. It covers the repairs needing to be made according to the amount of coverage that you purchase.
So do you really need an auto warranty? That depends a lot on you. The benefits may outweigh the costs. Car repairs can potentially be very expensive in the market today. Many buyers would not be prepared to pay a few thousand dollars in engine repairs when something goes wrong. A new or used car can be a large investment, and many prefer the peace of mind that comes from extended warranty coverage to the price of the warranty.
So what makes an auto warranty worth buying? What factors should I consider? Well, there are 4 questions you should ask yourself and evaluate while comparing warranties.
- What kind of coverage does it offer for repairs, and how flexible is it? Good extended warranty plans will allow you to take your vehicle into almost any repair facility for repairs and also cover fees associated with rental, towing, and travel/lodging.
- Is the warranty transferable if you sell your vehicle? For many warranty plans, the coverage is transferable to the buyer. This makes the vehicle much easier to sell.
- Does your claim have to be approved? By who? What do they approve or disapprove? Many dealers set up their own warranty services, but they may require that all claims are approved by them before they’ll offer coverage.
- What does it cover? Many warranty plans will cover and offer these services.
