Finding Employment the Easy Way

Have you been trying to find a job the old, conventional way — going out from business to business and asking if they need some help? If that’s not working for you, here are some other ways to find the employment you’re looking for.

Many companies these days are advertising positions through online services, temporary services and the newspaper. Here is some basic information to get started in finding a job the new-age way.

Online Employment Services

Many businesses and organizations are switching to online employment services to advertise job openings. Using the Internet is a faster, easier way for companies to screen potential employees. There are a number of different online employment services employers go through. You can go to any of the major search engines and type in keywords to find employment Web sites. Choose any of the Web sites to begin your search for employment. Most Web sites offering employment services will have categories of jobs you might be interested in. You can select a category to begin your search. For example, you might have some clerical data entry experience. If a clerical data entry category or something similar is available, you can select the category and begin your search. You can also specify to which geographic area you want to limit your search. Once you find a job you’re interested in, you can usually apply right there online. Sometimes you can even post a resume on an employment Web site and wait for companies to contact you. You should, however, make some contact with a company you’re interest in, either by calling them or through e-mail. Being aggressive will give you a better chance for an interview and for future employment.

Temporary Employment Services

If you don’t have access to the Internet, going to the local temporary employment services recruiting center may be the best thing to do. Many temporary employment agencies are located throughout the United States. You can find one by going to the Yellow Pages in the phone book and looking up “Temp Agencies.” You should find a comprehensive list of agencies in your area. You can call them and set up an appointment to visit with a representative. Usually when you visit with someone in the temp organization, you will fill out paperwork describing yourself, your interests, your skills and your past employment experiences. This gives the temp agency a better understanding of what you like and where you might fit for an employment opportunity. Once you have given the agency the necessary information, they usually take care of the rest. That means they will find you a “temporary position” with some company or organization. The position may last anywhere from a few days to a few months. Sometimes, depending on a company’s needs and your work ethic, companies will switch a temp worker to a full-time permanent position. Temp services are great ways to find out what kind of work you like and don’t like, and it gives you more experience as well.

Newspaper Want Ads

Many companies still advertise employment through the newspaper. You can get any local newspaper and find the “Want Ads” section and look for jobs there. Most of the time, you can find a name and contact number for a job that is listed in the newspaper. Just pick up the phone and make a call. This definitely does not require any effort except picking up the phone and pushing the buttons. You can talk to someone in the organization and find out more about the position and application procedures. Sometimes, organizations will set up an interview with you when you call. This is a simple, easy way to find employment close to you.

Whatever the circumstance, you can find some employment using these methods. Learn a bit about each company before you apply; this will definitely give you brownie points. Remember, it depends on you and how tenacious you are in finding employment. If you’re laid back and lackadaisical, you won’t find much. However, if you go on the offensive using these methods, you will generally find employment—no problem.
