An elliptical machine has many benefits to put it above and beyond other pieces of fitness equipment, but it also has a few drawbacks. Below are some of the points that make an elliptical machine the ideal workout device.
Benefits
- An elliptical machine offers virtually no impact. As opposed to other weight-bearing exercises such as jogging, an elliptical machine puts less pressure on your back and joints. This lack of force helps prevent sore muscles and joints, as well as harmful long-term effects, such as arthritis.
- It is easy to use. At first glance, it may look complicated and difficult to master. Granted, the look of an elliptical machine is a strange combination of a cross country ski machine and an exercise bike with moving arms. But despite its funny appearance, the elliptical machine is relatively easy to learn. Simply put, your legs travel in an elongated elliptical (hence the name ‘elliptical machine’) pattern while you can move your arms back and forth (similar to cross country skiing) if you choose. While some models vary, this is the basic set up of the machine.
- It is fun! With the fact that less stress is put on your joints, combined with the overall motion of the equipment, the elliptical machine is my ideal choice of fitness equipment whenever I am working on my cardio program at the gym. I can work up a good sweat and burn a fair amount of calories, but still not be completely drained.
- You work a wide range of lower body muscles, as well as some upper body muscles with use of the arm poles. An elliptical machine can be a full-body workout device if used properly, saving you time. It is a great calorie burner and metabolism increaser as well, which helps you burn calories even when you are just sitting on the couch!
Drawbacks
- While an elliptical machine can run a high price tag, that aspect is about the only drawback, and thankfully the market is calling for more advances all the time. You can already find an elliptical machine for almost any budget. The saying “you get what you pay for” can certainly be applied to some cheap models, but you do not necessarily have to pay thousands of dollars for a decent machine, either. If you know what you want and search around a bit, you should be able to find a model to fit in your budget.
Buying
Before purchasing an elliptical machine, it is helpful to read reviews. You can find fitness equipment, and specifically elliptical machine reviews, on various websites, as well as fitness magazines. Reviews are useful because they not only give detailed accounts of the particular model, but also comparisons in price and quality to other models and brands.
An elliptical machine can be a great investment and beneficial addition to your life, whether you use the one at the gym or purchase one for use in your own home.
