Elliptical Cross Trainers: What Are They and How Can They Help?

Elliptical cross trainers are only getting more popular. Those who are looking for a change from the same old treadmill in their workout routine every day may want to give this low-impact machine a try.

What is an Elliptical Cross Trainer?

Ellipticals are rising in popularity in gyms around the country. They are a low-impact exercise machine for muscle toning and cardiovascular fitness. It gets its name from an oval shape called an ellipse, which approximately illustrates the path one’s feet when running or walking. The concept behind it is to allow movement that falls somewhere between the flat motion of a treadmill and the circular one of a bike. There is also less impact on one’s feet because they never leave the machine — they simply glide along with it. All machines offer the motion of a forward ellipse, while others also offer a backwards motion that is as easy to get into as is the forward one. They also often have an adjustable incline ramp to allow concentration of different leg muscles. Some machines contain movable bars to get one’s arms involved in the workout as well.

The Areas It Can Help

Those with back problems find step machines can hurt their lower back and many find their feet getting numb from treadmills. The problem with running and other high impact activities is that the body is lifted off the ground and has to land, causing much force to be absorbed on landing. These forces are taken in by the feet and then to the ankle, knee, hip, or back. This causes pain for those with back problems. Since one’s feet never leaves the ground on an elliptical cross trainer, impact is said to be much lower. The cross training effect is attained because muscles in the lower back, arms and shoulders are also worked. This effect causes a better workout than a treadmill, while the person feels as if the workout was easier.

Where Can I Try One?

Most, if not all, gyms are equipped with at least one elliptical. As with any gym, one would have to be a member to use their facilities, and as with all new popular machines, you may have to wait to use the machine. Having to wait for any machine often causes one to not bother using it at all. They are also available for sale. Many online distributors sell the machines, which can drastically range in value, but one can expect to spend at least about $350 — and that would be for a fairly cheap one. A better quality machine may cost more than $1,000. The investment may be well worth it and could pay for itself in no time, considering the costs of gym fees. Some companies that sell ellipticals include Proform, Nordic Trac, Smooth, Reebok and Precor.

So, a machine that provides the same aerobic benefits as a treadmill with less impact and less stress to joints; it looks like the elliptical cross trainer will be a fixture in gyms and homes alike for many years to come.
