How to Get Cheap Used Cars

Used cars are second hand (or third or fourth, in some cases), so they should not cost an arm and leg. Cheap used cars are out there and waiting for you to pick them out and drive them home. But how do you know what you are paying for or what to be aware of? Follow this checklist when looking for cheap used cars to find the car that is right for you.

Age

Old cheap used cars does not necessarily mean bad or junky. Just look at some of the classic vintage cars people still drive today. Besides those classics, generally the older the car is the cheaper the car is. But of course you do not want a clunker sputtering its last breath. For the most part though, you can find cheap used cars around the age of five to seven years old that still have plenty of power and life left in them. These ages are a little softer on the repair bills, though that all depends upon the previous treatment.

Network

One of the best ways to find cheap used cars and not be cheated or swindled is to ask around your family and friends. Ask if they are selling a car, or know of anyone who is. Some people are lucky enough to basically receive hand-me-downs of cheap used cars for prices unheard of in the actual business world. My mom sold her old Honda to her brother for the low, low price of $1. But even if you are not so lucky to find cheap used cars at that great of a bargain, knowing the seller is still a benefit because you can get the real story behind the car.

Dealers

If you cannot seem to find anyone you know selling a car, or at least not one you want, a dealer is another option. Trade-in car dealers generally do not sell cheap used cars, but they have their own benefits. Used cars from these dealers are usually re-conditioned better than other cheap used cars and tend to include incentives such as six-month guarantees to sweeten the contract. Other kinds of cheap used cars dealer are those who stock cheap used cars. These cars do not have guarantees, but they will most likely have the vehicle of your choice for an appealing price.

History

Wherever you look for cheap used cars, it is important to find out the complete history of each car. A fresh coat of paint or new carpet may be deceptive in hiding rusty panels or more serious damage. Vehicle history is essential for cheap used cars because you might end up finding out why the car was so cheap three months down the line when it falls apart on you. Find out about possible accidents, damage, parts replaced, reconstruction and anything else that might qualify cars as “cheap used cars.”

Test Drive

Never buy cheap used cars without test driving them first. It is also helpful to bring a mechanic or knowledgeable friend along for the ride. Check insurance papers to make sure you are suitably covered in case of an accident, or else those cheap used cars could end up costing a lot more before you even own one of them. As you drive, listen for wrong sounds (or lack of right ones) coming from the engine or any other area of the car. Faulty hoses or fans are easily fixable, but a faulty engine is another problem. Take into account expected future payments before buying any cheap used cars.
