Donating a Car
If you have an old car you are thinking about trading in or reselling, but you know you aren’t likely to get a high price for it, or if you would just like to do something generous, you might consider donating it. Many charities exist that take old cars from donors, make sure they are tuned up and in good condition, then give them to individuals and families who are in need or sell them and use the money for a charitable cause. Most of these organizations will even arrange to conveniently pick the vehicle up for you and help you with any necessary tax and legal paperwork, so that any burdens involved will be taken off you.
While charitable organizations that accept and distribute donated cars exist throughout the United States, each state has its own set of rules and procedures regarding these donations, and different charities may exist in each location. California is no exception. Car donations in California can be done through a number of different organizations in multiple locations and may benefit those in need in many ways.
Donating in California
If you live in California and are considering donating your car to a charitable organization, there are several things you should know. First, you may not be limited to car donations in California; many of the same organizations that accept donated cars also accept such things as recreational vehicles, boats, motor homes, motorcycles, real estate, and other personal property.
You should also be aware that any donation you make to a nonprofit organization that is classified 501 (c) [3] will be tax deductible. Virtually all legitimate charities that accept donations of cars and other personal property items are classified as such, and therefore your donation will be tax deductible. Everyone’s personal tax situation is different, however, so you should consult with a tax professional in order to see exactly how you might benefit from your donation. Most charities will provide an evaluation of your vehicle’s condition based on a reputable book value resource to help you determine the amount of your donation.
In order to contribute to car donations in California, you will need to provide the title to the vehicle. If you cannot find the title to the vehicle, you will have to provide other official Department of Motor Vehicles approved paperwork certifying that you own the vehicle. If you are not sure exactly what is required, you should call the charity you are considering donating to, and a representative should be able to help you. The condition of the car in order for it to be accepted will depend on the individual charity, but in most cases they simply require it to be intact.
If you are looking for a charity in California that will take your donation, you can perform a simple search by using the Internet, telephone directory, or local charitable organization and nonprofit listings. Many exist in multiple locations throughout the state to help those in need benefit as much as possible from car donations in California.
