Baby Shower Invitations: Styles, Cost, and Etiquette

When planning a baby shower, you need to know what your options are for baby shower invitations, how to select them, and the possible price ranges. We’ve included this essential information, along with delivery etiquette tips, below.

Planning a baby shower for someone’s baby on the way? Don’t forget baby shower invitations! Because no one will show up at the shower without receiving an invite, invitations are the most important part of the event. Not only do they enable the attendance of your guests, shower invitations will set the tone for the shower, whether casual or formal, elegant or cute.

Delivery Etiquette

The invitations should be sent out at least two weeks before the shower. This allows your guests to plan ahead for the event before they have any conflicting events scheduled. To save on postage, you may want to hand deliver the baby shower invites to those who live near you. Don’t just leave invitations on the doorstep, since they may get blown away by the wind, eaten by a dog, or suffer some other mishap. You’ll want to either tape the invitation to the door at eye level (come prepared with a roll of tape), or hand the invitation to whoever answers the door.

Invitation Styles

As mentioned earlier, the invitations you send out will set the tone of the shower; make sure the two match. Here’s a list of some of the most popular invitation styles to give you ideas for your own invitations:

Baby Shower Invitations on a Budget

Shower invitations don’t have to be expensive. If you are hosting a shower for a large group, or if you would rather spend your money on decorations, food, or other accessories for the shower, you might want to look into free invitations. There are several ways you can do this. You can either hand make them yourself, make them on the computer and print them out, or find printable online shower invitations. Another inexpensive method of inviting your guests is to send online invitations by e-mail, although this option has its limitations since some of your guests may not have an Internet connection. If none of these are to your taste, however, luckily for you, invitations aren’t that expensive. The cheapest shower invitations may be under a dollar a piece, while the more expensive ones range from $1-$2, which is a fairly low price (although it can add up quickly if the group invited is large). You may want to split the cost of the invitations with all those who are throwing the shower.

Colors for Invitations

Traditionally, baby shower invites for girls are done in pink, and for boys they’re done in blue. When the gender of the baby is still uncertain, shower invitations are most often yellow. If you prefer something a little more formal, the shower invitations can be done in white and gold, or white and silver. If you’re going extremely casual, feel free to get brightly colored invitations rather than the more traditional pastels.

Plan out the baby shower invitations well in advance. It will relieve you of a load of stress and allow you to buckle down on the fun of planning the games and refreshments for the shower.
